Clayton Feb 2003 trip report ...
Well, last weekend, most of you know that the annual Clayton Raft Races was on again. And people from clubs all around grabbed their bags, chucked them in the car and headed to the far east of the Fleurieu Peninsula.
The Wanderers (though not invited) decided to join the crowds.
Though I missed the Saturday morning events, I did hear about the sun shade race (which we came second in) and Hannah the hole finder, finding just that and dragging Carol with her! Saturday night’s events led to every one listening to the musical poetic talents of our very own poet Carol. Our Red Faces act "the sounds of silence" involved the wonderful bird calls of J.C. the crow imitator and other wonderful camping sounds produced by our very own "Out with peace, in with noise" band or so to say. Though we didn’t make it to first we were happy to settle for second place (mainly due to some bribery!)
Sunday started off with an egg and bacon muffin at seven o’clock, for the people who don’t think holidays are for sleeping in. The Races started off at ten o’clock with the low-tech women’s heat.
Our fantastic four in this race were Carol the poet, Hannah the hole finder (in the depths of the bay), Super Sandra and me. We won our heat and went on to win the finals.
The next race was the low-tech men’s heat. The crew that made the distance in 56 seconds, an excellent time, were Tony the captain, Shaun the ferocious rower, Cliff the unstoppable and J.C. the marshal. Also won their heat and finals.
After some "Magic pineapple" conjured up by the miraculous magician Lyn to give the rowing stars a quick burst of energy the children’s low tech heat was on which was won in a record time of 53 seconds crewed by the Fabulous Four, Hannah, Shaun, Alek the strong and me.
Lunch was followed by Tug o War, which we decided to let the other team win because we had already won our other events. Rob our photographer won a raffle prize, the only one from the Wanderers to win something.
Everyone had fun and everyone was really helpful, everyone put in a great effort and it was a wonderful weekend for the winning Wanderers! I can’t wait for next year. See you then!
