Morgan - October 2003
Sat 25th Oct saw the Wanderers lead by Paul C and his unruly followers of Paula, Kaitlen & Daniel, Cliff & Jean, Cindy & Rick, Scott & Debbie, Les & Joy, and visitors Stuart & Karen.
9.30am found the majority awaiting the leaders’ instructions and the late arrival of Rick (maybe Cindy should start driving, or a better alarm clock). Cars and people fuelled up, we set off in the general direction of Banrock Station with Cliff leading as he was pulling a van. Along the way we conducted a mini bakery crawl and experienced members taking small detours to liquor stores.
We all arrived under constructed leadership at Banrock Station, where the more energetic of the motley bunch headed off on the shorter of the 2 walks approx 2.5k. Rick’s offer to piggy back Cliff lasted for all off 6 steps, so once again the question of which one had the most stamina remained unchallenged. Once back at the bar the tasting begun and some wines purchased for later consumption.
Onward to Monash playground where a ritual of washing with suds of the BBQ’s by our fearless leader and leaderess caused a few of us to watch in awe. The dysfunctional BBQ’s struck our leader not once but twice, so lets just say the remainder of the group were ready for the departure when the C’s were starting their lunch. May I say that at this time I noticed our visitors keeping their distance from the group, Karen even went so far as jumping off the flying fox to seemingly inflict injury to herself maybe so they didn’t have to continue (without success).
Lunch & playtime over, it was time to get to Morgan. The usual banter and good natured ribbing over the airwaves hopefully making the newer members and visitors more welcome as the bitumen went under us. Please note: They were not even asked if they had a computer at this time.
Arriving at Morgan C/Park found those of us in tents so intent on our setting up and chanting Bugga Off that we were unaware Cliff & Jean were still at the office as their car didn’t want to go. One RAA visit and Cliff was away.
Sat evening and cocktail time found Paul & Rick using willing tasters for their unique concoctions (rather interesting for one who doesn’t drink). Some were better fed to the grass and some rather nice, I believe more practise is required and should be pencilled in for another trip. As darkness and cold enveloped us, some pursued our wandering ways and found ourselves outside the hotels, it was decided to each throw a $1 on the ground and one delegated to try their luck with this money at the pokies, it was at this time Rick decided to make all fair, the only and most honourable thing to do to pick the delegate was "eanie meanie etc". The delegate Les, who has not played pokies, set off with the support crew closely behind to the "eanie meanie" chosen hotel, several minutes later saw all back in the middle of the street in deep discussion about the 38c credit we had lost.
Sunday morning sun arrived with whistling kettles and usage of the expertly calculated stock of firewood proved by the leader. The arrival of Iggy signalled the beginning of the Quarry driving part of the weekend. The quarry area with some steep climbs and strategically placed rocks making routes very challenging kept us all thoroughly engrossed until some had to head for home, the rest of us had lunch and then also headed for Adelaide.
