Peake 2003

Attendees:
Bill & Carol, Lee & Nicky & Sam, Rob, Jenny, Rick & Cindy, Terry & Gill, Graeme & Sharron, Geoff & Jean, Les & Joy, Dean& Deb & the little one , RobRoy & Gareth, Kevin & Rebekka, Darrel & Karen & Tim & Sam

Sharron and Graeme arrived Friday night, and entertained the crowd with their circle work looking for that elusive flat camping spot.

Saturday morning, all vehicles were inspected by Colonel Saunders (see photo) and his disciples, pointing out front and rear recovery points, and to make sure no loose items were sitting in the rear of each vehicle.

We set off on our first drive through the sand with normal road pressure in the tyres to show the newbies and refresh the experienced of the pitfalls of sand driving.

Terry was running on 25psi and buried the Discovery on an uphill track. Thinking Dean was a visitor, I asked Dean if he had any snatch experience, as he offered to drive around the other side of the hill to snatch Terry out. Unbeknown to me, Dean has been a member for quite a while and showed his experience by being one of the top performers of the week-end in his Jackeroo. Terry was easily snatched out and reduced his tyres to 20psi and did not have too many difficulties with the rest of the driving.

RobRoy’s new $105 front recovery points were bent while being snatched out by Lee. Will RobRoy Roar and demand a refund?????

Terry & Gill’s 40th anniversary was celebrated at Saturday Night Happy Hour with half a dozen bottles of sparkling red and an exquisite array of nibbles. Gone are the days of plonking a jar of salsa and corn chips on the table. Party pies and sausage rolls, mini pizzas, various gourmet cheeses and greens and other taste tempting nibbles are something to look forward to. Overheard Gill whispering to Terry "fill up on nibbles Terry, I won’t be cooking tonight".

Two adjoining campfires, (one for cooking), were a bonus for the large gathering of Happy Wanderers. Instead of an expanded circle, we all enjoyed the warmth of our elongated oval shaped camp-fire.

Paul and Barb were left high & dry after attempting a suicide sand mound. Watching his four wheels spinning freely was the funniest sight I had seen this weekend. After breaking off the convoy attempting to win the $20 photo competition, myself and others received a well deserved bollocking from Bill for not informing the rest of the group of the delay. Sorry Bill !!!

After her 4th attempt at Hill Impossible, Jenny proceeded to undress (thoughts of nude driving came to mind). After peeling off her jumper & rolling up her sleeves, Jen was ready for her final attempt. Sorry Jen, but you will have to lighten the load even more at your next attempt at Hill Impossible !!!

We were heading back to camp when Geoff , who after council duties drove up Saturday afternoon, was on the radio asking for assistance after embarrassingly bogging his Ford sedan on his way in. Only needed one recovery vehicle, but we are all a curious bunch and all vehicles went to enjoy the entertainment of Red Faces.

Kevin and his daughter Rebecca were welcome visitors to our group. Apart from his Maverick (on a Par to Deans’ Jackeroo performance) Kev’s digital photos, home brew and port drinking will see him readily accepted in the club if and when he joins.

Little Suzuki, after slowly training her mistress & master in the art of sand driving, showed off her capabilities in the sand tracks & reached the heights that only a select few could achieve. Well done Les & Joy.

Regular visitors to Peake would have noticed the absence of the much adored black and white Tenterfield Terrier. Whereabouts unknown.

Thanks again to Bill and Carol for organising and leading another memorable 4wding weekend.
Rick
