The Firemen’s Ball ....
Trip members; Kym & John, Rick & Cindy and Jane & JC
Preparation
In the planning stages hotel packages were available for those of us who would be too fatigued to return home in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
When these were initially offered to Rick moths were seen flying all around him, obviously trying to find his wallet. He went white and said, "You must be kidding I’ll get one of my children to get out of their warm bed and take us home". Fancy Rick saying that, he was counting his grade - one lunch money at the time.
John had to be in Berri for an I.T. job at 8.30am the next morning so they were going straight home, John to have a few hours sleep then off to work.
Jane & JC thought ‘what the hell’, spend the money, stay in the hotel and not have to worry about blowing into a bag on the way home.
The Staging Point
Our meeting point for this trip was to be in the foyer of the Ballroom at the Festival Centre in Adelaide.
Just before Jane & JC left the hotel room the phone rang, it was Rick, he & Cindy were at the Grosvenor Hotel. "But what about your family coming to get you and not staying in a hotel?", I said. To that he said something about his Fairy Godmother giving them free tickets.
His family had also told him what he could do after the ball was over; I think it was something about where he should put his glass slipper.
Soon we were all milling around with the other guests quaffing wine, beer & fruit juices.
Let the Show Begin
It wasn’t long before we were all seated and Cornesy & the 5AA Rock ‘n Roll Allstars were rocking the ballroom. Great music, food and company with everybody dressed to kill, a great cleavage and Rick was even wearing a bowtie.
Later in the night after we had worn Kym (our very own Spider Lady), Jane & Cindy out on the dance floor John & JC got up to dance, we asked Rick to join us but he was too shy or embarrassed. I’m not sure which.
It’s Over
All too soon it was midnight and the ball was over, where had the hours gone. It was time to buy your own drinks and that meant time to go.
All of us had a great time and it was good to see Rick blush.
The Next Day
After a very short nap John H arrived in Berri at 6.30am instead of 8.30am. Not bad going considering he does drive that Land Rover.
