The CUA Off-Road Bocce Competition For 2005

Jostling for Position Before the competition had started a strong protest from all the other participants lead by Russell (Mulpa) Quoit himself was against those unassuming champions from last year, Jill W & JC teaming up and defending their crown.

Tough T-----s
To select partners for this years comp all names were put into a hat and low behold Jill W & JC were again drawn as partners, poetic justice was served.

Let the Games Commence
As always the initial trials are the first team to 13 wins their heat, which has to be played on the Saturday. By tea time on that day we had 3 teams ready for the semi finals, with sudden death play-offs 1 end closes the kitty wins to be played on Sunday.

At that time Russell (Mulpa) Quoit was the only player who hadn’t been able to find anyone prepared to take him and his pulled hamstring on which wasn’t surprising. Then along came John & Kym (Jammy) Hill and Chris. So now we had another possible heat but as the rules state it had to be played on Saturday.

Try as he might with Russ squirming this way and that using allsorts of arguments was unable to put off the inevitable and play it early Sunday morning.

A Dark Night
Russell (Mulpa) Q & John played against Kym (Jammy) & Chris and their large little coaching team. Due to the conditions the referee used his that’s not a torch this is and Russ started up his Nissan to help light up a dark night.

The game was intense and spirited with good old Russ being good old Russ. The referee was seen by some to be a little biased against the continuing antics of Russell, with John heard saying 'what hope have I got?' It was said that at times this so called ref shone the light on a spot the kitty wasn’t ... what a vicious rumour.

Just as (Jammy) Kym & Chris were declared winners a neighbour staggered up gasping, coughing and struggling to breathe claiming that the fumes from Russell’s Nissan had filled his shack with poisonous gas and we were to stop at once. Off he went saying 'you’ll hear from my lawyer Russ'. If he thought that was poisonous it was a good job he didn’t cop the gas Russ was releasing on Friday night.

The Finals
The early cheering and jeering was soon silenced by Jill W & JC stunning win in the 1st semi final. After some very indifferent performances during their heat Kym (Jammy) pull one out of her proverbial.

The crowd was stunned the outsiders were through in a surprise result.

The Grand Final was a sterling affair with no quarter given by either team. Then Jill W put in what most thought was the winning shot, then a killer blow, another lucky ball from Jammy’s proverbial.

The crowd was speechless, it took a while to sink in the champions, against the odds, had been defeated.

The Wash - up
The 2004 champions were strongly considering a protest against Saturday nights referee but that was difficult because it was JC and who cares anyway.

As I write this Jill W and JC are in a European Bocce training camp getting ready for next year. It’s a good job they are not taking their loss too seriously.
