Fleurieu Frolics
Paul C, Cindy and I went along to the S.A.4WD Association AGM hosted by the Southern Districts 4wd club at Yankalilla on the weekend.
We camped on the footy oval, (95% caravans, 5% camper trailers & tents).
Mainly the older members of the 4wd clubs attended (as indicated by the amount of caravans), as it was an AGM on the Sunday.
We unashamedly went along for the tag-a-long tours but enjoyed meeting other clubs/ members and were enlightened to see how the S.A.4WD Association functions and the problems it faces.
Sat afternoon had driving skills competitions and rubber chook throwing comps. Sat night was a 3-course meal on the oval followed by the night’s entertainment by a local bush poet, Bob Magor. Brilliant stuff, very entertaining, very funny. A local winery provided wine tasting and I was a little tipsy just sampling (there very fine concoctions)
There was a raffle & I won a $50 sky-city casino voucher which was about the 30th prize.
We went on one of the tag-a-long tours (20 vehicles) Sat afternoon on a local farmers properties. It cost $20 with all money going to the local Lions Club.
Very scenic and good 4wding along the gorges and through a stringy bark mini-forest and to a waterfall.
On this tour we came across a very difficult looking track. What looked like a stock track going through the hills was actually an access track to an electricity tower.
The property owner said that he was not going to drive it and put the shivers up the rest of the convoy. About 5 vehicles went up the track (mostly from the drivers training unit) and the rest went back up the chicken track.
Ask Paul what track we went up!!! Never, ever, ever again will I leave The Trusty Terrano sitting back at the camping ground.
There is talk of allowing 4wd clubs to access these tracks.
Whyalla 4wd club may be hosting next years AGM.
Where-ever it is, we will definitely be making a club trip there again next year.
Rick
