Jill and I always look forward to this annual outing with Wanderers, partly because of the (mostly) lazy weekend, but of course because of "Off road bocce" and the way JC has everyone? Believing in his seriousness of purpose in winning. In the event, we were very late in starting out, so didn’t try to meet up with others, so headed straight to our first stop to cool down at Pt. Wakefield. We were chatting to a lady from Qld. Staying in the caravan park, when we heard JC and Eric chatting on the radio, so I directed them to where we were and they came for a short break and to cool down. From there, of course, we travelled pretty much together. ![]() We arrived at Balgowan, mid to late afternoon, and all sat down between John's Taj Mahal and our caravan to catch the cool breeze coming through. Did I mention it was hot? The sea breeze was most pleasant. Sharon and Graeme arrived in the evening. Saturday was a lovely day, weather-wise, but not so good for Jill and JC. (eliminated very early) (ha ha hee hee). For a change, the bocce was played on grass. This is still off-road you understand, but not far enough off-road for John’s liking! The best part of Saturday was the fishing, well not personally, but Graeme caught a very nice size whiting and Jill caught one just over size and a big-ish flathead. Graeme just managed to get his fish ashore as hid brand new reel collapsed into many small pieces and luckily found them all.Sunday - Sudden death bocce. That is one end only played on the roughest piece of ground John could find! Finalists Shelley and Graeme played Sharon and Eric, the final winners. By now Fred and Jacquie had arrived, later the previous evening, so we made a bit larger crowd to go and clean up. We managed to fill the trailer and even had car body parts to pile on top to hold it down. We also had to hold Jacquie down or she would still be walking the beaches and filling bags. Upshot of the weekend.Sharon and Eric - Bocce champs Jill - Top catch fishing Jacquie - Major rubbish finder Bruce - Finder of demolished utility Graeme - Demolisher of fishing tackle Bruce & Shaz Clean Up Australia at Balgowan Due to the fact that some of our club members are motor sport fans our collector numbers were down this year because the Adelaide Clipsal 500 was on while we were doing CUA.But by Sunday morning we had 7 4WD vehicles and 10 people gathered at the Clifftop Camping Ground at Balgowan. From there we went north along the foreshore first to the lookout, then Tipper Rocks and finally to The Bamboos picking up all sorts of rubbish. We used 20 CUA bags to pick up broken bottles, plastic, car parts, disposable nappies and other assorted rubbish. We will be back somewhere on Yorke Peninsula again for Clean Up Australia next year. JC Dear Site Coordinator, I would like to thank you personally for participating in the Clean Up Australia Day campaign. A total of 345 groups or individuals registered this year compared with 349 in 2006. Considering the later than usual start to the campaign, this is a great achievement! You and your helpers are to be commended for your efforts overall. Many thanks once again. I look forward to your participation in the 2008 campaign.
