Clayton Bay Retreat & Red Faces 2008

The Acts were
Jill & Bruce, Margie & Chris, Gary, Cathy & Tr?, Barb, Paul (RC) & Katrina and Jane & JC - we also had several acts that suffered from stage fright and stayed home talking about shopping for heaters, stock taking, colouring hair, kite flying and polishing exhaust pipes.

Preparation
JC arrived at 5pm on Thursday afternoon and set up (The Black Pearl) Jane’s new caravan. Early Friday morning at about 10am I went through my map of the area and decided to work out a new way to get to Goolwa.

So after lunch off I went finding so interesting (mainly) dirt roads, a conservation park and a scenic lookout. It looked fairly easy but looking and being isn’t always the same.

Friday Afternoon Arrivals
Jill & Bruce and Barb, Paul & Katrina arrived within 15mins of each other. Bruce & Jill set up their caravan with the minimum of fuss and effort the same couldn’t be said for Russell Coight.

Katrina was hopping around on crutches as she had moved back home while the fractures in her foot mend and Barb was standing behind their van with a hand held radio occasionally calling out for Russ to move forward so the van wouldn’t touch any leaves hanging from a nearby gum tree.

All this time Russ was in and out of the car commenting on the lack of information coming from Barb. Eventually the van was in place after being pulled square by hand.

As Russell was sipping some medication and still talking about Barbs radio information Trina said that Paul often commented that he never listens to her radio guidance anyway.

Happy Hour No. 1
It was time for our famous happy hour which went for a long time then the evening meal followed by endless banter on everything one imagination could think of on 4WDriving, trips and stage acts which was great interest to all of us Thespians.

Margie & Chris arrived early Saturday morning but had to wait to check into their onsite van so they were ready to sight see after a short rest.

Places to Go and Things to See:
At about 10.30am Barb led all but JC who was awaiting the arrival of Jane to discover what was at Point Sturt which turned out to be receding water levels and sand hills.

Jane arrived just before the rest got back from Point Sturt we had lunch then we were off on our afternoon trip to Goolwa via plenty of dirt roads a conservation park and a lookout.

Our journey took us to Scott Conservation Park where we all started out on a walk through it. It soon became evident Trina would be in difficulty due to the fact she was using crutches and there were deep creek beds to cross so she went back to the vehicles with Paul to keep her company.

The further we went on our walk the track markers became more obscure so much so that after some initial confusion we decided to turn around and went back the way we came to where we had started from. It was a good robust walk which had taken about 1 hour to complete.

Mosquito Hill Road took us first to the main road to Victor Harbour then to the scenic road with a lookout over looking Port Elliott and then on to Goolwa.

At Goolwa it was fuel, shopping centre, bakery Goolwa Beach then back to Clayton.

Red Faces<BR> After happy hour and the evening meal we all fronted up under Barb & Paul’s awning for the main event. JC started with a whole lot of his corny jokes with others also telling funny stories.

Jill (in a spectacular hat) did a magic act which was surprising and received a high marks. Then Trina did a quite spectacular three legged Can-Can dance which was loudly applauded.

Of course we had several songs from our Golden Guitar winner (or so he said, I think he brought it in a souvenir shop) which unfortunately fell a little flat on the night.

It was decided that Jill’s magic act had won on a close count back from Trina’s dance routine well done all who came and took part.

Sundays late check out
After a sleep-in and breakfast it was off to the Currency Creek Winery to checkout their cuisine which was well received. The weather had been cool and pleasant and as always the company was great thanks to all of you performers.
