We arrived at Andrew and Sarah’s block at the Moonta Mines Friday morning. Here we were greeted by Sarah and the retirees, in their comfy caravans Paul, Barb, Katrina, Bruce and Jill. After setting our camper trailer up very quickly we set off to Kadina with Sarah to enjoy the Furry dance which is a dance performed by over 100 local school children dressed in their traditional costumes down the main street of Kadina. It was a delightful, enjoyable site. From the main street we then headed to the square to enjoy the presentation of the May Queen entrants and the singers of the Choir with one of them being our own Carol Saunders singing to her hearts content. This is a time when Sonya was a little distracted with her view being blocked by a very attractive like pink marshmallow hat. The girls Sarah, Carol and Sonya then decided to spoil themselves with a bottle of Swanky. Amazingly this Swanky Beer was actually brewed especially for the festival at our own local Regency Park TAFE which funny enough is within walking distance of my own home. Apparently the Swanky was very enjoyable and was followed by a delicious Cornish Pasty. The first of many for the weekend.

Friday night became a night of dogging the rain; this is where Paul and Barb’s verandah came in very handy. Most people arrived constantly throughout the night with Hannah and Andrew arriving after their drink at the Dublin pub. Saturday morning everyone one woke early to make sure they were at the main street of Moonta by 10.30am to enjoy the magnificent Grand procession of floats, vibrant costumes, marching bands and dancers. This is where once again the local school children entertained us with another enjoyable morning in their traditional costumes performing the Maypole dance. How cleverly talented they are. For those of you who have never enjoyed a Maypole dance I strongly recommend you attend the next Kernewek Lowender.

From here we traveled a short distance down the road to purchase some long overdue lollies from the very cute local lolly shop. Thomas insisted he have the large gob stopper which was meant to keep him quiet all weekend.

Early afternoon we got the bomb fire going and enjoyed happy hour this is when Andrew thought he would have some fun with Hannah. Andrew proceeded to head off to get his dried dead lizard. Which I believe Andrew found on their Moonta property and has treasured every since. Andrew believed Hannah’s lap looked like a good spot for this lizard to rest but Hannah had other ideas. Frightened out of her wits flicked the lizard off her lap which forced the lizard to land in the fire. I have never seen Andrew run so fast to retrieve something as he did that afternoon to save his dried dead lizard from the fire.

As Andrew didn’t want an early night Saturday night he prepared for wet whether. So being a good host as he is. Decided to clear one of his sheds, setting a light and BBQ up for all to share. But you guessed it! No rain in sight. As we were lucky enough to enjoy the company of Andrew and Sarah’s son Martin, daughter in law Emma and grandchildren Nathan and Cooper. Martin had a mission for the night he was to knock Thomas’ gob stopper from his mouth sometime through the night. Mission accomplished, gob stopper in the dirt. So off Andrew trotted to wash the gob stopper but unknown to Thomas replaced it with a golf ball only to return the golf ball to Thomas mouth. It was a moment not to be missed. This was a night of visitors where we were lucky enough to enjoy the company of Carol and Bill Saunders and Pete and Anne who are Andrew and Sarah’s delightful neighbours.

Sunday morning and still no time for a sleep in, this was a morning where we enjoyed bacon and eggs very early. With no time to lose needing to be at Wallaroo by 8.30am to enjoy a day with Geoff and Jeanne in the Classic Cavalcade not even enough time to say a proper farewell to our fellow campers (and apologize deeply for not doing so).

Andrew and Sarah were lucky enough to let their hair blow in the wind and hitch a ride in Stephen and Jennifer’s 1913 model T Ford.

Thomas and Sonya enjoyed a back seat ride with Jeanne and sister in law Joan in the fabulous 1967 sexy red Mustang. Myself I had a fabulous once in a life time ride in Geoff's 1927 Whippet with the company of Geoff’s Brother Fred. As it was the same car my father had when I was a child hence the old photo of me around 1960.

What an extremely lucky day this was for us. It was an exciting day traveling with over 500 classic cars through the streets of Pt Hughes, Wallaroo, Moonta and ending at Kadina. Waving, laughing and thoroughly enjoying the experience. The Cavalcade run finished at the Kadina oval with a carnival atmosphere where we then once again enjoyed a hot Cornish pasty and admired the cavalcade display of over 500 cars and motorcycles of 30 years and older. Thomas and I secretively chose our favorites and discussed quietly how we were going to convince Sonya into letting us purchase our dream car.

As we returned to Andrew and Sarah’s property we decided how we could end such an enjoyable day packing, to return home, so decided to stay and enjoy the country life one more night. This was a night where we were lucky enough to share the warmth of the pot belly in Andrew and Sarah’s cottage while we ate our huge hamburger which left egg on Sonya’s chin, jacket and lap. This is also to Sonya’s disgust where Ben decided to stamp his feet to prove the mud in the cottage was not from his boots. Oops! Or was it!!

We wish to thank Andrew and Sarah for their hospitality and Geoff and Jeanne for allowing us to share their incredible experience.

Ben
