Clean Up Australia 2010 - Coobowie / Edithburgh ...

The Wanderers 4WD Club who are based in the North-Eastern suburbs of Adelaide for the 8th year in a row have picked up rubbish on Clean up Australia Day on the Yorke Peninsula. We are a member club of the SA Association of 4WD Clubs who actively support this initiative in many areas around South Australia.

With the official clean up day falling on the Adelaide Cup long weekend our members decided that we would do our bit for the environment on the 20th and 21st March 2010.

This year we tackled areas of Hickey’s Point, Sultana Point and Wattle Point. We used 20 CUA bags to pick up personal household items such as clothing, women’s & children’s shoes, toys, broken bottles, plastic sheeting, cardboard as well as other larger assorted rubbish, such as galvanised iron, fencing wire and various rusted metal about 500kgs in total.

This year there was very little 10c claimable drink containers or plastic shopping bags.

Most items were on and in the sand dune edges of the beaches. It was old rubbish most of which would have been dumped some time ago by trucks.

We could only remove a very small amount of this material in our 2 trailers.

We also filled 1 bag with recyclable cartons, cans and bottles which we cash in and donate the money to the Royal Flying Doctor.

We easily doubled the amount of rubbish we collected last year.

We would like to thank Stephen Goldsworthy, Customer Services Manager of the District Council of Yorke Peninsula for guiding us to these locations and this Newspaper for its promotion of this Clean up Australia event.
